How To Get a Reddit Post Removed

This guide goes over how to get a Reddit post removed, including your own posts and posts from other people.

Of all the social media platforms that let us connect with friends, family, business contacts and acquaintances, a Reddit account is one that is primarily for connecting with strangers.

When you have a Reddit account, you can find a subreddit for pretty much anything you can think of, from your career niche to your favorite TV show to odd health concerns you assumed nobody else is dealing with.

It’s a place for lighthearted and fun conversations, deep and serious debates, and everything in between. You can decide that sharing personal information is right for you, or you can stay extra private and only chat about surface-level issues — anything goes when you have a Reddit account.

And like any social or publishing platform, there will be times when you see content you don’t like and feel shouldn’t be public.

Sometimes, that content will be your own — maybe you posted a question 5 years ago that’s outdated and irrelevant now. Other times, the content will be someone else’s, like a person who’s spreading false information or putting your brand in a bad light.

In either case, you have options for removing the content or at least asking that it gets taken down. In this article, we’ll go over the steps for each scenario.

7 Reasons To Remove Reddit Posts

There are a variety of reasons to remove a Reddit post, whether it’s your own post from your Reddit account or someone else’s. Here are some of the most common causes for wanting to know how to have a Reddit post removed.

Incorrect Information

A Reddit post that contains incorrect information — whether it’s outdated or was wrong all along — should come down, especially if it’s impacting a person’s or business’ online reputation.

Low Engagement

If a post you put up using your Reddit account didn’t get the attention you expected it to, you may want to remove it so that your profile appears more active.

Negative Comments

Some Reddit posts attract a ton of negative comments or controversy from other Reddit users, even if the subreddit or the original post is pretty tame. When a post’s comments section gets out of hand, it’s a good idea to take down the post completely to stop the spread of negativity and reduce any damage it could cause to your online reputation.

Poor Grammar

If you realize that a post you put up using your Reddit account has unclear wording, typos and other issues, it may be a good idea to remove it and repost it. Poor writing, including unclear language and bad formatting, can reflect negatively on you, especially if you represent a brand via your Reddit account.

Privacy Issues

If your own post or someone else’s post exposes information you’d rather keep private, it’s best to take it down or request its removal.

Resolved Issues

In some cases, a person will post a question on Reddit that’s already been answered in full elsewhere. It’s a good idea to remove the repetitive post to keep the subreddit’s content streamlined and easier to navigate.

Subreddit Violations

Every subreddit has rules that participants have to follow, such as not including links in posts, no self-promoting, and no hate speech. Posts that violate these rules should come down to maintain the integrity of the subreddit. Also, ensuring that you follow subreddit rules will keep your Reddit account in good standing.

How To Remove Your Own Reddit Post

Removing your own Reddit post or comment is easy. Here’s how to do it.

1. Sign in to your Reddit account.

Go to Reddit and sign in.

2. Go to your profile.

Click your image or avatar on the top-right of the page. Click View Profile from the drop-down menu.

The left sidebar includes options like Home, Popular, and Explore. The right sidebar features a user dropdown menu with options for profile and settings.

3. Go to the post or comment you want removed.

Click the Posts or Comments tab, and then find the content you want to remove.

4. Delete the post or comment.

To delete a post, click the three-dot menu button on the top right corner. Select Delete from the menu.

To delete a comment, click the three-dot menu button underneath the comment. Select Delete comment from the menu.

The first is a vertical ellipsis for more options, while the second is a dropdown featuring choices like "Edit comment," "Save," "Delete comment," and "Turn on reply notifications." The original post appears to be removed.

How To Remove Someone Else’s Reddit Post

While you can’t personally remove another person’s Reddit post or comment, you can report it, which could lead to its removal. Here’s how to do that.

1. Select the report option.

Go to the post and click the three-dot menu in the top right corner. Click Report from the drop-down menu.

2. Select a reason for the report.

There are several options to choose from when selecting the reason for the report, including breaking the subreddit rules, harassment, a copyright violation, etc.

A pop-up menu titled "Submit a report" lists options for reporting violations like harassment, hate, or minor abuse. If a Reddit post is removed, review Reddit's Content Policy and rules for more details.

For a brief description of an option, click it and read the overview at the bottom of the window.

A description below explains that content infringing a trademark you own or control can be reported by the trademark owner or an authorized representative, potentially leading to the reddit post being removed.

Once you’ve made your selection, click Next.

3. Add more info.

Next, you’ll provide more context based on the reason you provided. Make your selection and hit the Submit button when you’re done.

A form titled "Submit a report" shows options for reporting types of spam, including unsolicited messaging, excessive posting, karma farming, sharing harmful links, using bots or AI, and other issues that may lead to a Reddit post being removed. A "Submit" button is at the bottom.

Social Media and Your Online Reputation

Social media, including Reddit, can be a huge factor in your online reputation. That’s true for your personal reputation and your business reputation, too.

In addition to being a marketing tool for influencers and brands, social media and your Reddit account is also a listening tool for businesses that want to tap into their audience’s mindset. Plus, it’s a sharing tool for people who want to discuss and hear about different experiences.

If Reddit and other social media posts or comments are causing problems with your digital reputation, you have a lot of options.

Online reputation management (ORM) professionals can find mentions about you online, from social media to news articles, blog posts and more. ORM experts can then remove or suppress that content so it doesn’t rise to the surface in Google search results.
